Fall is coming….I can feel it! Now when we get up in the morning, it’s chilly, and that makes me frisky and that makes Mama laugh, which is what I am all about! My pal Stuart in Richmond, has pumpkins of all sizes, some little ones growing right outside his stoop, where the birds dropped the seeds. We on the other hand, have a compost pile, a relatively new project, which we feed coffee grounds, eggs shells, asparagus ends, kiwi and cucumber peels, strawberry tops….whatever Mama feels like stuffing in her empty morning yogurt container and taking out back. So far, we are “growing mushrooms”. I don’t think that was a part of the plan. The Mater says this is the beginning of Indian Summer, one of the best times to be in North Carolina. Are your seasons changing?……yes, you over then in Australia…is it Summer for you now? Mama isn’t going to the Wooly Worm Festival this year, so we will have to rely on the Farmer’s Almanac to tell us what our winter is going to be like. What’s your favorite season?

Nope, not fall yet! Mornings are cool and crisp like fall, so are the evenings, but during the day it’s still warm. Fall is our favorite season and the apples are just delish!
What in heaven’s name is the Wooly Worm Festival? Is that a fall thing?

The WWF is held in Banner Elk, in the NC mountains in October. if the wolly worm is mostly black, it’s gonna be a hard winter. If they are mostly brown with some black, a milder winter is predicted. It’s quite a festival…there are worm races, crafts and awesome Fair Food!

Thanks for the explanation. Kind of sounds like “Groundhog Day” except predicting what kind of winter it will be. The crafts and food sounds wonderful… worm races? Not so much.

The worm races are hysterical! They crawl on their own, on a short length of clothes line, which is set up on a big stage. The races are called just like a horse race. The man who calls the races, Mr Wolly Worm himself, is very colorful, wearing a yellow jacket coved with woolly worm buttons, etc, and he wears a wooly worm hat. No worms are harmed in the “running”…and we use the term very loosely, in the race.

These are pretty cool worms, Kis…very furry. And the worm races are hysterical…Mama sez they all have names, just like race horses do. The only thing that is a Debbie Downer for Mama is seeing all those children with Wooly Worms, cause she knows the worms would be better off released back into the woods.
